The World Debates India’s Future
The 23rd India Economic Summit took place in New Delhi from 2-4 December. Following are the key highlights of the event
The Taj Palace Hotel in the capital came close to representing the nerve centre of Indian economic activity between 2 and 4 December as the venue of the India Economic Summit, jointly organised by the World Economic Forum and the Confederation of Indian Industry. It was a gathering where the country’s leading businessmen, economists, policy makers and political leaders came together to take stock and discuss India’s economic future. The presence of more than 600 participants from around 40 countries was a constant reminder of the fact that not only does the world have its eyes trained on India, but that it also wants to have a say in the way its future is moulded.
With an average growth rate of 8.6 per cent over the past three years, India became a trillion-dollar economy earlier this year, and according to a PricewaterhouseCoopers report it might become the largest economy by the middle of the century. So, the interest in India is inevitable. But P. Chidambaram, the minister for finance put this interest in perspective. “The drivers of growth seem to have moved from the developed world to the developing world,” he said in ‘The Shifting Power Equation’ session. But he added, “That does not mean that economic power has shifted.” Speaking at the opening plenary, Mukesh Ambani, chairman and managing director, Reliance Industries, echoed similar thoughts, saying that the new century has seen the context of international relations being shifted from geo-politics to geo-economics.

Honourable Minister of IT&C, Andhra Pradesh, India’s visit to Detroit
Overall a great speech and was well received by audience.
This year I became member of Detroit Telugu Association (DTA) and started getting involved with programs and events.
On Sunday May 13th at wee hours at night Srinivas Koneru sent an invite with the following:
Sri. Damodar Reddy Ramireddy, Minister for Information Technology & Communications, Government of Andhra Pradesh (AP) will be in town (Detroit) on Monday, May 14, 2007. You are invited to attend a reception hosted in his honor by India League Association (ILA).
Date & Time : Monday, May 14, 2007 7:00 PM
Sent my confirmation immediately though it is a short notice. Most events notified at least two weeks in advance. The venue is about 40 miles and in peak hours (heavy traffic) would take anywhere between sixty to ninty minutes.
I started at 6:20 PM and reached at 7:40 PM and the meeting just got started with introductions.
About fifty plus people are present and glad to see some familiar faces and felt homely.
After introductions, felicitations and other formalities, it is time for the Honourable minister to address the audience.
His speech was good and he impressed the crowd very well. Though he is new to the ministry, he answered the questions with balance and knowledgeably.
Key points from speech are:
AP Government will continue to encourage IT and attend to Agriculture as this government felt that this sector was neglected in last few years.
Reviewed the progress of Fabcity plans and mentioned that his meetings with several semi-conductor CEOs from Silicon Valley in USA were very encouraging.
Measures are taken to bring IT more towards Class B cities.
Provide quality education and training through Jawahar Knowledge centers.
New incentives and packages for setting up IT shops in Visakhapatnam, Warangal, Kakinada, Vijayawada and Tirupati.
Also setting up IT Hubs at Cuddapah, Kurnool, Anantapur, Nalgonda and Vizianagarm.

Non-IT highlights mentioned are as follows:

Mr. Reddy alleged that the Telugu Desam party didn’t do much for the IT sector. “Though IT is a new subject for me, I would try to bring international fame to the sector using my experience,” he said adding that IT would bring considerable revenue for the State exchequer in the future.
